Mini-Mikan

This week we found some fruit that was sold under the name 御正月みかん(O-shougatsu-Mikan). Thereby Mikan or Citrus unushio is a fruit that is sold in Europe as seedless Mandarin and the term O-Shougatsu refers to the end-of-the-year holidays around Jan. 1st. First, we thought that the fruit, which is really small compared to an ordinary Mikan (see image on the right) could be a Daidai (or Bitter Orange), but neither the taste nor the texture match with that idea. Since the taste is almost identical to a normal Mikan (only a little bit more sweet) I was thinking the we just purchased a few “Mini-Mikan” fruits, but maybe someone who reads this article has another idea what the name of this fruit could be?

It looks like a Clementine from Corsica… Not sure though of the scale on the picture :)

Actually the smaller of the two fruits is about 4-5 cm in diameter. In the meantime we almost come to the conclusion that both are Mikan fruits and the smaller one is just a mini version of the “brother” :-)
