Square watermelons

When temperaturs are climbing towards the upper 30ies in Japan and school holidays are almost at their peak, supermarkets are well equipped to provide any kind of goods for the families who are enjoying their summer holidays. This includes an extended selection of fruits which are not available throughout the year. Beside the fruits which are not available because it is just not the right season, there are also a few exotic looking fruits. One of those is the “square watermelon”. It is basically the same fruit as an ordinary water melon except that farmers grew the melons in cubic glass boxes so that the fruit assumed the shape of the container. Some people say that melons are forced into this shape to make them easier to be stocked in the market or later on in the fridge. However, prices well below 100 EUR per melon are not a real argument that justifies the amount of space you save in your fridge. Most people believe that it is a pure marketing strategy to advertise and sell a normal product for a totally overpriced amount of money. Well, I can’t judge if the taste of the square watermelon is different from a normal melon, but today in the supermarket I was thinking that the design might also has a huge drawback: A round melon can be eaten easily with a spoon, but the square species complicates things quite a lot … :-)
